A sofa in Torrevieja absorbs a different mix to a sofa in Manchester, and it does it faster.
Body oils and sweat salts. Nine months of the year people sit on these sofas in shorts and a t-shirt after being outside. Skin oils transfer straight into the fabric and oxidise, which is what produces the darker, slightly shiny patches on the arms and headrests. It is not dirt in the ordinary sense and wiping does nothing to it.
Suncream and after-sun. The big one. Modern high-factor creams contain titanium dioxide and heavy oils that bond into fibre and oxidise to a yellow-brown mark which keeps darkening for months. Owners often do not notice until it is well set. It is treatable but the timeline matters — a mark from last week is straightforward, a mark from last August is real work.
Sand and calima. Beach sand works into the seams and the base of the cushions where it abrades the fabric from inside. Saharan dust settles into the weave and stains light upholstery if it gets damp.
Humidity and mould. In closed-up properties, cushion filling holds moisture through the winter and grows microbial colonies. That is the source of the musty smell in an apartment that has been shut up, and it is inside the foam rather than on the surface, which is why airing does not shift it.
Every sofa gets fibre-tested first, in an inconspicuous spot, because the wrong method on the wrong fabric is how upholstery gets ruined. Most fabric sofas take hot-water extraction. Delicate weaves, viscose blends and some linens take low-moisture steam instead. Leather gets cleaned and conditioned rather than extracted, at €40.
The process is a dry-soil pass first, then a pH-neutral non-toxic pre-spray with dwell time, then agitation appropriate to the fibre, then hot-water extraction, then a residue-free rinse. Set-in stains and odour get an additional targeted treatment at €15. Fabric protector, applied afterwards, is €20 per item and genuinely worth it on a rental property.
A three-seater takes around an hour to an hour and a half. Drying is four to six hours with normal ventilation, faster with the air conditioning running. We never rush the extraction passes to hit a time — the price is fixed regardless of how long it takes us.
We will also tell you honestly on arrival if something will not come out. Where a spill has stripped or altered the dye, the fabric is permanently changed and no amount of cleaning restores the colour. We would rather say that at the start than take your money and disappoint you.
